Peripheral Nerve Block

A peripheral nerve block is a procedure whereby a local anesthetic is injected near a peripheral nerve; this prevents pain signals from reaching the brain.

What Is The Indication?

Peripheral nerve block is indicated for patients who have severe and/or chronic pain unresponsive to oral analgesic medication (including opioids) or other treatments.

Am I A Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for a peripheral nerve block if you have :

  • lower back pain
  • neck pain
  • sciatica caused by herniated discs
  • lumbar canal stenosis
  • reflex sympathetic dystrophy (complex regional pain syndrome)
  • pain arising from peripheral vascular disease
  • cancer pain.
  • shingles pain
  • myofascial pain syndrome

What Does The Procedure Involve?

A nerve block needle, or a peripheral nerve catheter, is inserted in the vicinity of the relevant peripheral nerve. A continuous infusion of local anesthetic via a pump device ensures long-lasting pain relief.

What Are The Advantages Of The Procedure?

Peripheral nerve block provides longer-lasting pain relief than oral medications, and also reduces the need for opioid use.

How Long Does It Take?

Approximately 10-15 minutes, with about 40 minutes for recovery.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

Usually several, repeated at regular intervals.

When Will I See Results?

You should notice results in about 15 minutes after the procedure.

What Are My Alternatives

  • Oral steroids
  • Oral analgesics (NSAIDs or narcotics)

Will I Have Pain?

Anesthetic is used during the procedure, so pain during the procedure should be not be a major issue. Post-procedure, there should actually be pain relief.

When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?

Usually the same day as the procedure.
