Scoliosis, a type of curvature of the spine, is a common condition in children and preadolescents which may persist into adulthood.
What are the Causes of Scoliosis?
Most cases of scoliosis are idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown. In adults, the cause may be related to degenerative changes occurring in the spine.
What are the Symptoms of Scoliosis?
The majority of scoliosis cases are asymptomatic when diagnosed, usually on routine X-ray. However, as the disease progresses, it may manifest as:
- Chronic, severe back pain
- Deformity
- Increased pain when grasping or gripping objects
Who Is Likely To Get Scoliosis?
Most cases of scoliosis are found in otherwise normal children (and adults). However, patients with these conditions may be more likely to have scoliosis.
- Family history of scoliosis
- Muscular dystrophy
- Spina bifida
- Cerebral palsy
What Does Treatment for Scoliosis Involve?
- Watchful waiting
- Orthopedic Braces
- Surgery
Surgical Treatment
Surgery is not standard first-line treatment for scoliosis, but when other, more conservative methods fail, it may be quite helpful. It is recommended in cases where curvature exceeds 45 degrees, or for curvatures that do not respond to use of a brace.
The recommended surgery is usually posterior spinal fusion with instrumentation and bone grafting. The surgery is performed through the patient's back while the patient lies on his or her stomach. During this type of surgery, the surgeon attaches a metal rod to each side of the patient's spine by using hooks attached to the vertebral bodies. Then, the surgeon fuses the spine with a piece of bone from the patient's hip (a bone graft). The bone grows in between the vertebrae and holds them together and straight. This process is known as spinal fusion. The metal rods attached to the spine ensure that the backbone remains straight while the spinal fusion takes place.
What Are The Advantages Of Surgery?
Surgery may provide significant symptomatic relief and stop the progression of the disease for sufferers of scoliosis in cases where other types of medical management are not successful.
How Long Does It Take?
Surgery for scoliosis typically takes about 2-3 hours.
How Many Treatments Are Required?
Usually, one surgery should suffice.
What Are My Alternatives to Treat Tennis Elbow?
- Orthopedic braces
- Watchful waiting
Will I Have Pain?
Pain should be reduced by treatment. There may be some postoperative pain, but this can be managed by prescription or over-the-counter medications.
When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?
Most patients are able to return to work or school in 2-4 weeks.
Who Will Perform My Treatment?
One of our board-certified orthopedic surgeons will perform the procedure.
How Much Does It Cost?
Please call TopSurgeons at 800-506-8084 for more information.
Will My Insurance Cover Scoliosis Treatment?
Insurance should cover this condition and any approved treatments.
