Dental Implants
Dental implants are essentially artificial tooth roots that are placed in
the jaw that attach to replacement teeth or bridgework.
What Are The Indications of Dental Implants?
Dental implants are indicated as a method of tooth
replacement which is natural-appearing and comfortable.
Am I a Candidate for Dental
Implants?
If you are in good
general health, and you have adequate bone in your jaw in the areas which are
missing teeth to support the implants, you are a good candidate for the procedure.
Whether you are missing a single tooth, a few teeth, or you need a full set of
teeth, dental implants can correct the problem.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
Getting dental implants is a two-to-three step procedure. First, surgery is
performed to place the anchor in the jawbone. Surgery can take up to several
hours, and up to six months may be required for the bone to grow around the
anchor and firmly hold it in place. Some implants require a second surgery in
which a post is attached to connect the anchor to the replacement teeth. With
other implants, the anchor and post are already attached and are placed at the
same time.
After the gums have had several weeks to heal, the next step is begun. The
artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. Because
several fittings may be required, this step can take one to two months to
complete.
What Are the Advantages of Dental Implants?
- The look and the feel of the implants are just like your
own teeth. They are practically indistinguishable from the real thing.
- Because dental implants are integrated into the bone
structure, they prevent the gum recession and bone loss that often goes
along with dentures or bridgework.
- They can’t come loose like dentures and don’t require
messy pastes or adhesive creams.
- You don’t have to worry about food getting stuck
underneath them.
- You don’t have to worry about misplacing them because they
become a permanent part of your mouth.
How Many Treatments Are Required?
Usually one treatment obtains the desired result. However, as explained
above, the procedure may need to be done in stages.
Will I Have Pain?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so there is usually very
little pain. Most patients report that a routine tooth extraction is much more
uncomfortable than receiving dental implants. After the anesthesia wears off,
there may be mild pain or discomfort, but this is easily managed qith
over-the-counter or prescription pain medication.
When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?
We recommend that you take the day of surgery off and the following day, but
some patients elect to go back to work immediately.
Who Will Perform My Treatment?
All treatments are performed by our expert cosmetic dentists.
