Lap Band Operation

The process for Lap Band surgery begins with a consultation to see if you are qualified for the procedure.

Once a perspective patient has been identified to be a go for the procedure, the surgery, which is performed under general anesthesia, will be conducted on an out-patient basis and the patient will likely finish up in 30 minutes to an hour.

Lap Band procedure

Lap Band surgery involves forming a small pouch in the upper portion of the stomach with a controlled and adjustable stoma to limit the amount of food that an individual will consume.

A band device is placed through small incisions in the abdomen and is situated around the upper part of the stomach. The resulting pouch (or the "new stomach") limits the functional capacity of the stomach. The band has a balloon from the inside that can be adjusted and is able to decrease stoma size, thus contributing to the period of fullness.

Lap Band adjustment is an easy procedure and painless, as a doctor will inject saline into a port situated under the skin in the wall of the stomach. The tube that comes off of the band makes its way to the port. The number of Lap Band adjustments will vary from patient to patient.

Lap Band Advantages

Both doctors and patients will tell you that the Lap Band Operation provides a number of advantages over similar procedures. Among the advantages will be: No cutting or stapling of the stomach area; the band can be adjusted to each individual's needs following surgery and is a painless and easy procedure done during a short visit to your Lap Band health professional; the band can be removed if the patient so chooses.
