The process for receiving Lap Band surgery begins with a free seminar with a TopSurgeons specialist.
Among the things you will discuss with a specialist will be your Body Mass Index (BMI), which is used to gauge whether or not you may be a good candidate for Lap Band surgery.
Evaluating BMI for Lap Band
Among the needed qualifications to undergo the Lap Band procedure will be if an individual's BMI is 40 or higher, or they weigh at least twice their ideal weight, or they weigh at least 100 pounds more than their ideal weight.
BMI is arrived at by dividing body weight (lbs.) by height in inches squared (in2) and multiplying that amount by (704.5). Some Lap Band procedures will be done with lower BMI's (see below), but that factor will be discussed between you and your doctor at the time of consultation.
Patients who are morbidly obese are more likely to have a higher potential for health-related problems, so Lap Band surgery can not only change their life in a cosmetic manner, but can be a life-saving procedure to add years to one's life.
Health risks for an individual who is morbidly obese can include type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
If your body mass index (BMI) or body mass is between 35 and 39, then you must also have associated major medical problems, or co-morbid conditions, in order to be eligible for Lap Band surgery.
BMI's Can Be as Low as 27
TopSurgeons will do a BMI as low as 27 as an off label use of an FDA approved product. The conditions which need to be present normally include diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension.
The ideal body weight for an individual's height should result in BMI of between 19 and 24.9. If an individual has a BMI above 30, they are considered obese and may be a good candidate for weight loss surgery.
