Lap Band Adjustment

While Lap Band surgery can get you started on the road to successful weight loss, there are adjustments that one will need to make following the procedure itself.

Among the first things a Lap Band patient will do in the weeks and months following surgery is to have the band itself adjusted.

How the Adjustment Works

Following Lap Band surgery, adjustments are made by way of a thin needle to inject or remove saline from the band via the access port. Being able to adjust the band is one feature of Lap Band surgery, and is a normal part of the follow up with your TopSurgeons specialist. This feature lets your surgeon arrive at the right level of restriction to meet your individual needs.

Once the Lap Band placement procedure is finished the band is usually left empty or only partially inflated for a period of time.

Adjustments are not usually performed until 4 to 6 weeks after surgery although the exact time will vary from patient to patient. You and your surgeon will decide when to move forward with the first band adjustment.

To determine the correct timing for your first Lap Band adjustment, your TopSurgeons specialist will look at a number of factors that will include:

* Weight loss to date;

* The amount of food that can be comfortably consumed;

* Your present exercise schedule; and

* The amount of fluid presently in your band

Post Lap Band Surgery

Patients who have successfully gone through Lap Band surgery and have begun with their band adjustments will also have several other items to remember.

It is important to work with your surgeon and/or a nutritionist to maintain a proper and healthy diet following your surgery. It is also important to maintain a healthy exercise routine and to maintain a positive attitude during your post-surgery recovery.
