Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a viral
infection of the liver which can be quite serious, especially in young
children, the elderly, or immunocompromised patients.
What are the Causes of Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is caused
primarily by ingestion of contaminated food and water. The contamination is
usually of fecal origin. Although many cases are in areas of consistently poor
sanitation, hepatitis A outbreaks have been observed in fine restaurants,
cruise ships, and the like. Hepatitis A has been transmitted via contaminated
produce (green onions, strawberries) and shellfish (oysters, clams, and
mussels). Hepatitis A can also be transmitted by contact with an infected
person.
Hepatitis A is preventable – there is now a
vaccine available!
What are the Symptoms of Hepatitis A?
Symptoms may include:
- Jaundice (yellow cast to the skin and eyes)
- Fever
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
Who Is Likely To Get Hepatitis A?
Anyone who is exposed to
the virus may contract it. Some people who are particularly susceptible are:
- Infants and young children
- Day care employees and children who attend day care
- Travelers to third-world countries with poor sanitary conditions
- Homosexual men
What Does Treatment for Hepatitis A Involve?
Most of the time,
Hepatitis A is a self-limiting condition. It may take several weeks to resolve,
but most of the time, treatment consists of fluids and bed rest.
What Are The Advantages Of Treatment?
Treatment with gamma
globulin can reduce symptoms if administered after exposure.
How Long Does It Take?
Most patients recover
within 6 weeks, but a small subset of patients may take several months to
recover.
What Are My Alternatives to Treat Hepatitis A?
There
are really no good alternatives to treat hepatitis A infection.
