Septoplasty is a medical/cosmetic procedure that can correct defects and deformities of the nasal septum (the partition between the nostrils/an internally crooked nose divider) or rebuilds it if damaged.
The nasal septum is the wall separating the left and right nostrils from each other. A deviated nasal septum occurs when the nasal septum is not centered between the two nostrils. A well-centered septum allows equal airflow through each nostril.
A deviated septum may cause no symptoms at all. In severe cases, however, airflow through one or both nostrils may be blocked. Nostril blockage may cause chronic stuffiness (nasal congestion) and a tendency to get sinus infections.
What Is The Indication for Septoplasty ?
Septoplasty is a surgery to correct deformity or separation of the nasal septum and correctly reposition it.
Causes of Airway Obstruction
There is a variety of causes of chronic nasal airway obstruction including: nasoseptal deviation, refractory turbinate (nasal mucosa) enlargement, chronic allergic rhinitis, chronic vasomotor rhinitis, nasal polyposis, chronic sinusitis, congenital choanal atresia (congenitally obstructed nasal passage), nasal valve collapse, adenoid tonsil enlargement, chronic adenoiditis, and outer nasal deformity due to trauma or surgery.
Symptoms of Airway Obstruction that May Require Septoplasty
Two common reasons for internal nasal obstruction due to nasoseptal deviation are nasal injuries like a blow to the nose, sports injury, or a car accident and cartilaginous growth irregularities. 5 percent of all cases of a deviated septum occur at birth.
Symptoms can include:
- Stuffy nose (one or both sides)
- Sinus infections
- Nosebleeds
- Breathing noisily during sleep
- Facial pain or headache
- Postnasal drip
What Does Septoplasty Involve?
In septoplasty bony spurs are trimmed or removed if present. The cartilage is morselized and repositioned back to its original position. Bone is also restored to the center to achieve reasonable straightening and better nasal airflow.
At times small splints are placed inside to support the septum. These are removed simply in a few days time. Packing is not required.
What Are The Advantages of Septoplasty?
Surgery on the septum alone is called septoplasty. Septoplasty relieves nasal blockage by centering the septum between the two nostrils or restores it if is severed. Many septoplasties are performed during rhinoplasty procedures, which are most often performed for cosmetic purposes.
How Long Does SeptoplastyTake?
Septoplasty takes about 30 minutes to perform on an outpatient basis
How Many Treatments Are Required?
Usually only one treatment is required.
When Will I See Results?
Most patients have significant improvements in symptoms following surgery.
Will I Have Pain?
Before the patient leaves all dressings inside the nose are usually removed.
The head should be elevated while during the first 24-48 hours after surgery. Patients should breathe through the mouth while the nasal packing is still in place. Minor bloody discharge is normal but excessive bleeding should be reported to the physician immediately. Antibiotics are usually not prescribed unless the packing is left in place more than 24 hours.
Most patients do not suffer significant amounts of pain, but those who do have severe pain are sometimes given narcotic pain relievers. Patients are often advised to place an ice pack on the nose to enhance comfort during the recovery period.
When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?
Patients who have splint placement usually return seven to 10 days after the surgery for examination and splint removal.
Who Will Perform My Septoplasty Treatment?
All treatments are performed by plastic surgeons
