What Is Scar Revision?

Scar Revision is a surgical method of decreasing the appearance of scars. It can also be applied to thick scars such as hypertrophic scars or keloids.

What Are The Indications for Scar Revision?

  • Unsightly scars
  • Keloid scars
  • Hypertrophic scars

Am I A Candidate?

You may be a candidate if you want to make your scar appear less noticeable.

What Can I Expect From The Procedure?

Scars can be treated in several different ways, depending on the type of scar and the location of the scar. The simplest method is excision of the scar and closure so that the new excision line lies across the natural skin creases ("lines of relaxation") or parallel to these lines, where it will be less conspicuous. An advanced technique often used for scars and contractures is the Z-plasty, where the scar is repositioned with multiple flaps that are rearranged to cover the wound at different angles, giving the scar a "Z"pattern. Flaps and grafts are other techniques that are used for more challenging scars. Flap surgery is a complex procedure in which skin, along with the underlying fat, blood vessels, and sometimes the muscle, is moved from a healthy part of the body to the injured site. Grafting involves the transfer of skin from a healthy part of the body (the donor site) to cover the injured area. Skin grafting and flap surgery can greatly improve the function of a scarred area. In general, flap surgery obtains better cosmetic results that graft surgery. While no scar can be removed completely, we can often improve the appearance of a scar, making it less obvious. Don’t panic if the area looks worse right after surgery. Generally the final results may not be apparent for a year or more.

What Are The Advantages of Scar Revision?

Improvement of unsightly scars or reducing functional impairment of scars

How Long Does It Take?

The procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

Usually one treatment obtains the desired result. Follow up treatment may be necessary.

Will I Have Pain?

Most patients are essentially pain free during this procedure. We anesthetize the area and this is sufficient for most patients. As every person has a different threshold for pain, for those especially sensitive patients, we have developed other protocols to ensure that the treatment is extremely comfortable and tolerable allowing you to fully enjoy the results without pain.

When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?

You can generally be back to work or school same day or next day.

Who Will Perform My Scar Revision Treatment?

All treatments are performed or supervised by our skilled board certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons.

What Are My Alternatives to Scar Revision?

Can I Be Treated If I Have Dark Skin?

Will My Insurance Cover?

Most insurance companies do not offer reimbursement for cosmetic procedures; however, if scar revision is done to minimize scarring from an injury, to treat disfigurement or to improve your ability to function, insurance may cover the surgery. Pre-authorization by the insurance company is required prior to surgery.
