Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition, mostly affecting the face, having as its hallmarks redness and flushing of the skin, and sometimes acne-like lesions.

What Are The Characteristics and Symptoms of Rosacea?

  • Facial flushing and persistent redness
  • Papules and pustules (red, acneiform lesions)
  • Visible
  • Rhinophyma (a swelling of the nose, with enlargement caused by excess tissue; W.C. Fields’ nose looked the way it did because of this condition)
  • Ocular rosacea – this is rosacea that affects the eyes, with major symptoms including dry eyes, redness of the sclera, burning, tearing, swollen eyelids, and recurrent styes.

Who Is Most Likely To Have Rosacea?

  • Fair-skinned people who blush or flush easily
  • Adults between ages 30 and 60
  • Women more frequently afflicted than men; but men have more severe symptoms.

What Is The Treatment for Rosacea?

  • Topical antibiotic creams
  • Oral antibiotics (doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline, or erythromycin)
  • Laser treatment

What Does Laser Treatment for Rosacea Involve?

Laser treatment can get rid of visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), reduce the excess tissue of rhinophyma, and reduce the appearance of acneiform papules and pustules. An IPL Fotofacial (photorejuvenation) laser is applied to the area, releasing precisely-directed pulses of intense, single-wavelength light.

Are You A Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for laser treatment if

  • You have rosacea, and other treatment approaches have failed.

What Are The Advantages Of Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment has a distinct advantage over drug treatment in rosacea, because the laser actually treats the vascular problem - a major component of rosacea - by vaporizing the blood vessels. Also, it can remove disfiguring excess tissue in rhinophyma.

How Long Does It Take?

Usually 15-30 minutes per treatment.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

About 4-6 treatments, performed at 3-4 week intervals.

What Are My Alternatives?

  • Topical antibiotics
  • Oral antibiotics

Will I Have Pain?

Sometimes, patients experience a stinging sensation during the laser pulses. This is usually compared to the snapping of a rubber band, and not usually intolerable for patients. There is rarely any pain after the treatment.

When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?

Who Will Perform My Treatment?

The surgery will be performed by one of our highly-trained dermatologists.
