Ringworm
Despite the name, ringworm has nothing to do with worms; it is a fungal infection of the skin occurring in various locations, and is also known as tinea.
What Are The Symptoms of Ringworm?
Ringworm has a very characteristic appearance: its red, raised lesions often resemble rings. There is typically a variation in color from the outer edges of the lesion to the center. Ringworm lesions often are very itchy. Ringworm can infect the scalp, in which case it is called tinea capitis. The fungus responsible for ringworm also causes jock itch, sometimes known as tinea cruris, and athlete’s foot (tinea pedis).
What Causes Ringworm?
Ringworm is caused by several varieties of fungi belonging to a class known as dermatophytes. You can get ringworm from skin contact with an infected person, or even from a pet. Cats are carriers of ringworm. You can also get it from contact with items an infected person has used such as combs, brushes, and bedding.
Who Is Likely To Get Ringworm?
Anyone can get ringworm, but it is more common in children, and outbreaks have often occurred in schools and day-care centers.
What Does Treatment for Ringworm Involve?
Antifungal creams containing clotrimazole or miconazole may be helpful. In stubborn cases, especially where the scalp and/or beard are involved, oral antifungals such as griseofulvin may be indicated.
What Are The Advantages Of Treatment?
The lesions are cured with treatment.
How Long Does It Take?
Treatment with topical creams should be for at least several weeks.
How Many Treatments Are Required?
Steady treatment for several weeks is required; to prevent recurrence, you should continue treatment for at least a week after the condition fully resolves.
When Will I See Results?
Ringworm does not go away overnight. It typically takes about 3-4 weeks to clear up.
What Are My Alternatives to Treat Ringworm?
There are no good alternatives to the treatments described above.
Will I Have Pain?
Ringworm may be itchy, but not painful.
When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?
As long as you are receiving treatment for ringworm, it is safe to go back to work or school.
