Pigmentation problems is a catch-all term referring to a wide variety of abnormalities in skin coloration. Sometimes, birthmarks are included in this category, but they will not be dealt with here. Please see our article on birthmarks.

What Are The Types of Pigmentation Disorders and Their Characteristics?

  • Albinism
    • a genetic disorder characterized by the absence of melanin production; therefore, there is no pigmentation in the skin, eyes, and hair
  • Melasma
    • Tan or brown patches on the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin.
    • Sometimes called “pregnancy mask,” though can occur in men.
  • Vitiligo
    • Progressive loss of pigment-producing melanocytes, producing white patches.

Who Is Most Likely To Have This Condition?

· Melasma – you may be more likely to have melasma if you

  •  
    • Take photosensitizing medications
    • Have hormonal changes or are on hormone therapy
  • Vitiligo
    • Usually appears by age 40
    • Tends to run in families
    • More likely to occur in patients with thyroid or other autoimmune disorders
  • Albinism
    • A recessively-inherited trait.

Treatments for Pigmentation Problems:

  • Albinism – no treatment except symptomatic management
  • Melasma
  • Vitiligo
    • Hydroquinone creams
    • Laser treatment

What Does Laser Treatment Involve?

  • Laser skin resurfacing involves simple local anesthesia, followed by application of the laser to the affected areas. The discolored region is easily removed.

Are You A Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing if:

  • You have pigmentation problems (melasma or vitiligo) which are unresponsive to other treatment

What Are The Advantages Of Laser Treatment?

  • Usually long-lasting results
  • Can treat large areas.

How Long Does It Take?

Usually 15-30 minutes.

How Many Treatments Are Required for Pigmentation Problems?

Multiple sessions may be required.

Will I Have Pain?

Sometimes, patients experience a stinging sensation during the laser treatments. This is usually compared to the snapping of a rubber band, and not usually intolerable for patients. There is rarely any pain after the treatment.

When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?

Immediately. However, there will be redness for at least the next several days.
