Lipoma
A lipoma is a benign tumor comprised of fat cells that manifests in the subcutaneous tissues. Lipomas are usually very slow-growing, and may not be noticed until they are rather large.
What Are The Symptoms of Lipomas?
Lipomas usually present as non-painful, round, mobile masses, with a characteristic soft, doughy feel. Very rarely, a lipoma may be painful, but they are usually painless. The overlying skin appears normal. Lipomas can usually be correctly diagnosed by their clinical appearance alone.
What Causes Lipomas?
Lipomas may be caused by a genetic propensity to develop them. In some cases, lipomas have also developed after trauma or injury at the location of trauma.
Who Is Likely To Get Lipomas?
- Patients with a family history of lipomas
- Multiple lipomas more common in men; single lipomas more common in women
- People age 40-60
What Does Treatment for Lipomas Involve?
The only practical treatment for lipomas is surgical excision. For large lipomas, this used to involve similarly large incisions. Now, TopSurgeons offers their Minimal Excision Technique, which uses a very small incision. This enables complete excision of the lipoma, but leaves a much smaller scar than the traditional surgical approach. The technique is performed in the office, and requires only a local anesthetic.
What Are the Advantages Of Treatment?
The Minimal Excision Technique allows for the removal of large, unsightly, and sometimes uncomfortable lipomas that previously would have required large incisions and their resultant scars.
How Long Does It Take?
The procedure usually takes about 15 minutes or less in the doctor’s office.
How Many Treatments Are Required?
One treatment is required per lipoma; however, sometimes, lipomas come in bunches, so further surgery may be necessary later.
When Will I See Results?
You will see results immediately after surgery.
What Are My Alternatives to Treat Lipomas
Anecdotal reports have suggested various techniques to get rid of lipomas, but none of these has had any significant reports of success or clinical studies to back them up. Techniques discussed have been (among others):
- Mesotherapy
- Deoxycholate injections
- Collagenase injections
Will I Have Pain?
Lipomas themselves are rarely painful. There may be minor post-operative pain, but this is easily controlled with nonprescription analgesics.
When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?
You need not miss work or school.
Who Will Perform My Treatment?
One of our board-certified dermatologists will prescribe the appropriate treatment.
How Much Does It Cost?
