Intertrigo
Intertrigo is an inflammation occurring in folds of the skin; it may occur in abdominal folds, around the perineum, inframammary (under the breast) areas, or near the axilla (underarm).
What Are The Symptoms of Intertrigo?
Itching, burning, and stinging in the affected areas are the most common symptoms. Redness (erythema) and weeping or crusting is often noted.
What Causes Intertrigo?
Friction of the skin folds in the presence of moisture, body heat, and perspiration is the catalyst for the process. Then the area is colonized by microorganisms, usually Candida, but sometimes bacteria or fungi as well.
Who Is Likely To Get Intertrigo?
Obese patients are more likely to develop intertrigo due to the increased presence of pendulous skin folds.
What Does Treatment for Intertrigo Involve?
Air conditioning and absorbent powders are helpful at alleviating symptoms. Skin folds should be separated and exposed to air. Using drying agents such as carbol-fuchsin solution (aka Castellani paint) is sometimes helpful. A protective barrier cream such as “Triple Paste” or “Greer’s Goo” (a specially compounded mixture of the antifungal nystatin with zinc oxide and hydrocortisone) treats mycotic infections, prevents abrasion of skin surfaces, and calms inflammation.
In the long term, patients are encouraged to consider losing weight, monitor glucose levels if diabetic, and make sure good hygiene is always maintained.
What Are The Advantages Of Treatment?
Correcting the causes of the condition is very important to prevent the disease process from worsening.
How Long Does It Take?
This varies depending upon the responsible organism and the extent of the infection.
How Many Treatments Are Required?
Steady treatment for at least 14 days should be followed.
When Will I See Results?
Intertrigo does not go away overnight. It typically takes a week or two to get better.
What Are My Alternatives to Treat Ringworm?
There are no good alternatives to the treatments described above.
Will I Have Pain?
Itching is more prominent than pain, but if there is severe inflammation, pain may result from the rubbing together of opposing surfaces.
When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?
You need not miss work or school.
Who Will Perform My Treatment?
One of our board-certified dermatologists will prescribe the appropriate treatment.
