Folliculitis
As the name implies, folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles, and can occur on any hair-bearing area of the body.
What Are The Symptoms of Folliculitis?
Inflamed, red, pus-containing hair follicles are the primary symptom. Deep folliculitis may develop into boils and carbuncles. A type of folliculitis called “hot tub folliculitis” manifests as small, red pustules on the trunk, arms, and legs.
What Causes Intertrigo?
Most cases of folliculitis are caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Hot tub folliculitis is caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Some types of folliculitis can be caused by other Gram-negative bacteria or by yeasts, such as Candida and Pityrosporum.
Who Is Likely To Get Folliculitis?
- Immunocompromised patients
- Patients on long-term antibiotic therapy for acne
- Overweight patients
- Residents of hot, humid places
What Does Treatment for Folliculitis Involve?
Treatment depends on which organism is responsible for the folliculitis. For staph infections and Gram-negative infections, appropriate antibiotic treatment is indicated. For boils and carbuncles (deep folliculitis), incision and drainage is often helpful, followed by antibiotics. For fungal folliculitis, oral or topical antifungals should be given.
What Are The Advantages Of Treatment?
Treatment kills the infectious agents responsible for the condition.
How Long Does It Take?
This varies depending upon the responsible organism and the extent of the infection.
How Many Treatments Are Required?
Steady treatment with antibiotics/anitfungals for approximately 7-10 days should be the rule.
When Will I See Results?
Folliculitis does not go away overnight. It typically takes a week or two to get better. However, incision and drainage of large lesions helps relieve pressure and pain, as well as improving the appearance of the lesion.
What Are My Alternatives to Treat Folliculitis?
There are no good alternatives to the treatments described above.
Will I Have Pain?
Deep folliculitis may cause painful boils or carbuncles.
When Can I Go Back To Work Or School?
