Lung Cancer Screening
According
to the National Cancer Institute, lung cancer is the third-most common
type of
cancer in terms of number of new cases per year (non-melanoma skin
cancer is
first), closely following prostate cancer. However, there are more lung
cancer deaths per year than deaths from any other type of cancer. Lung
cancer is one
of the deadliest forms of cancer, and this is often because once it is
diagnosed, the disease has metastasized throughout the body, and
chemotherapy
is not curative at this point.
This means, more than
ever, that early detection can mean the difference between life and death. New
detection methods have greatly contributed to surgeons’ ability to deal with
this disease in an effective manner.
What are the Indications of Lung Cancer
Screening?
Screening for lung cancer is indicated for both current and
former smokers. Smoking is the cause of over 90% of lung cancers. It may also
be prudent to screen the spouses of smokers or other family members who have
been exposed to years of secondhand (sidestream) tobacco smoke.
Am I a Candidate for Lung Cancer Screening?
Anyone can technically be
a candidate for screening, as there are some cases of lung cancer that appear
(rarely) in nonsmokers. However, the best candidates for lung cancer screening
include anyone who has ever smoked and those who have been constantly exposed
to tobacco smoke. Also, working with asbestos or arsenic and exposure to radon
gas may cause lung cancer.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
The
first-line screening technique is a chest X-ray. This shows gross lesions to
the lung. However, more sensitive techniques have enabled earlier detection of smaller
tumors. Chief among these is low-dose spiral CT (computed tomography), also
called LDCT.
LDCT is a noninvasive
procedure. It is extremely simple for the patient. The patient lies still on a
table and is directed to take a deep breath. The table, with the patient on it,
moves through the CT machine, which is shaped like a donut. As the table and
patient move through the “donut hole,” the CT machine rotates around the table,
and thus a composite of 3-D images of the patient is created.
Sputum cytology is a
technique that may identify abnormal cells from sputum (mucus coughed up from
the lungs). The present of abnormal cells may determine whether a bronchoscopy
or lung biopsy should be performed.
Now, there is a more
powerful technique of identifying potential lung cancers: genetic analysis of
the sputum. Six genes which are known to undergo specific changes during the
development of lung cancer are examined. If three or more of the genes are
methylated, there is a 6.5 times greater risk for lung cancer. These genetic
changes are noted up to 18 months before the appearance of any clinical
symptoms of lung cancer, giving the physician a significant “heads-up” to the
situation.
What Are the Advantages of Lung Cancer
Screening?
Because lung cancer metastasizes so fast and so easily,
early detection is critical. If a tumor is localized to the lung, it can be
surgically resected and cure is possible.
How
Many Treatments Are Required?
You should be screened on a regular basis if you are a smoker or ex-smoker.
Will I Have Pain?
The procedures used for lung cancer screening are generally non-invasive and
painless. If bronchoscopy is required, there may be some discomfort, although
sedation is used for this procedure.
When Can I Go Back To
Work Or School?
Usually you may return to work immediately.
Who Will Perform My
Treatment?
All treatments are performed by our expert physicians, who are extensively
trained in the administration and interpretation of these types of tests.
How Much Does Lung Cancer Screening Cost?
The cost for this
procedure may vary from patient to patient depending on various factors;
however, we guarantee that our pricing will always be competitive with that of
other local providers furnishing equivalent services.
We provide excellent financing options, and discounts for multiple procedures
are available.
